OUR VISION STATEMENT
At Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, we are building the Body of Christ through the Word of God.
OUR MISSION STATEMENT
At Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, we are committed to provide sound biblical preaching and teaching of God's Word. Our mission is to win souls to Christ and to nurture the spiritual growth for all ages by enhancing personal living, family living, and social interaction. We want to provide regular and fervent worship opportunities to lead the congregation in the development of a life of devotion and praise.
CHURCH HISTORY
“Upon this rock, I’ll build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against thee” (Matthew 16:18). These are the words upon which the Galilee Missionary Baptist Church was founded. The original building was located on the corner of Buck and Booker T which at this present time is a part of Interstate 10. On August 15, 1931, Rev. E. J. Galloway was called to pastor where he competently led this congregation from 1931 until he was called to rest in 1979. Our church began with a very small membership. From time to time the church did grow in numbers as well as in strength.
In 1932, the members saw to the improvement of the church by adding water, lights, and gas. In 1949, the church was destroyed by fire. We were granted the privilege to worship in the afternoon at the New Testament Baptist Church. Bro. Ted Grace then opened his doors at 3601 Providence and made us welcome to worship at Grace’s Funeral Home. Services were held in this mortuary for approximately two years. These were years of hard times and poverty. The indebtedness to reconstruct and buy was beyond the mastery of the congregation. Pastor Galloway offered to the Deacon Board and membership a portion of his property to build a new place for worship and this place is now our present location.
On May 11, 1951, we had our groundbreaking services. We thank God for our present-day sanctuary and the improvements that have been made. In August 1979, Pastor E. J. Galloway was called home to be with the Lord. Upon his death, our ministerial staff conducted our services.
Rev F. LaVergne was elected and served as our pastor until January 1982. Following his departure, the church elected Rev. V. R. Jefferson as our new pastor in May 1982. Under his leadership the church purchased the property that we now call home. In 1986 Galilee Mass Choir recorded their first album entitled “Running for Jesus”. The Album was a great success and was nominated for a Stellar Award in 1987. Due to illness, Rev. V. R Jefferson was retired from his duty as Pastor.
In November 2002 we elected Rev. Byron D. Wyatt as pastor. In January 2003 he was installed as the new Pastor of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church. Under his leadership, our membership has increased. Our new building was built in 2005.
We pray with God on our side, we shall continue to grow in strength as is his will.
